ÒLooks like thereÕll be a party on the ÔDragonÕ tonight, Ian.Ó

ÒAn orgy more like, from what IÕve heard. I doubt weÕll be invited.Ó

Enrico and I paused in humping my dinghy over the seawall to watch the well dressed group of men and ladies make their way along the pontoons of the marina and clamber daintily into the fine varnished launch and head for the ÔGolden DragonÕ, a luxury motor yacht moored near the main channel. Elsewhere theyÕd probably be classed as Ôthe jet setÕ; well-to-do young yuppies aged, at a guess, in their mid twenties to late thirties. About a dozen of them, probably more men than women but I didnÕt do a head count. We launched our dinghy, loaded it with the gear IÕd require for a three-day stay and I started the outboard motor and headed for the ÔSarsaparillaÕ, my 30 ft fishing boat. My companion, Enrico, lives in Fordbridge where the boat is based, and keeps his eye on it for me and regularly comes out in it for an hour or twoÕs fishing. I live twenty-five miles away in the country and, on the narrow roads, it takes a hour to drive there. I planned to spend three days on the boat but Enrico would go home to his wife later that day.

A nice day to be on the water but with an almost calm sea and bright sunshine, not a good day for fishing and we only caught two flat fish. I took Enrico ashore about six oÕclock and had a meal with him and his wife but only stayed an hour before returning to the boat. The ÔGolden DragonÕsÕ launch nestled alongside the pontoon at the marina and seeing Josh, an elderly ex seaman I knew, looking after her, I greeted him, ÒThey invited you to the party then, Josh?Ó

ÒNot bloody likely. Nowadays, I couldnÕt give them young things what theyÕs a wanting. TheyÕs a needinÕ young fellas like you, but I doubt youÕve got enough money in your pocket for them. TheyÕs dining and wining in the White Harte at the moment.Ó

ÒI couldnÕt afford to keep one of them for one night and I daresay theyÕd turn their noses up at what IÕve got!Ó I joked.

They returned about nine oÕclock in a merry mood. Sitting in the ÔSarsaparillaÕsÕ cockpit, I heard the raucous laughter as they passed and slowed to berth alongside the Dragon on the mooring fifty yards ahead. Some even returned my wave. Later I heard the disco music, which, to my mind, spoiled the serenity of the late evening with the sun going down on a calm sea and the water beginning to light up with the phosphorescence especially when a bass would leap above the surface and land with a splash. Pity one of them didnÕt take my bait earlier. I lay down for a while but, as often happens on my first night aboard, I couldnÕt sleep and a little before midnight and an hour to high water time, decided to fish the last of the flood by the light of a near full moon. Sometimes fishing at night is more profitable than during the day, but even if it isnÕt, it is a peaceful and relaxing way to spend an hour. Certainly I caught a very different fish that night. The noise from the yacht had quietened and I assumed they were all in each otherÕs beds and fucking madly.

IÕd reeled in my line ready to bait the hook again, when I glanced at the boat ahead and saw the figure of a naked woman, pale and white in the moonlight, climb over the stern rail and stand poised on the taffrail for a few moments before throwing herself in the water. A shower of ÔsparksÕ from the phosphorescence went up and when she just drifted towards me I realised she wasnÕt in the water to have a midnight swim. In any event she couldnÕt have climbed the high sides of the ÔDragonÕ even if she swum back to it against the slackening tide. Without thinking, I jumped into the dinghy, cast off and, not wanting to fiddle with starting the outboard, slipped the oars into the rollocks and began rowing towards the figure, her splashing threw more sparks of into the air, clearly revealing her presence. Seconds later I drew alongside and grabbed her hair, then her arms. ÒLeave me be,Ó she repeated several times but I wasnÕt about to leave a young girl in the water to die. Even in July the water temperature wouldnÕt be above 10 Celsius and before too long sheÕd become chilled and suffering with cramps. With great difficulty and eventually getting her to cooperate, I managed to roll her into the boat, where she sat crying on the floorboards while I rowed back to the ÔSarsaparillaÕ. ÒDonÕt take me back there, please,Ó she begged, indicating the ÔDragonÕ. I had no intention of doing so. Whatever made her want to take her life, would probably make her do it again.

In the dim cabin light, the young, attractive but bedraggled girl shivered and cried as I grabbed a towel and started to dry her. ÒMy husband held me while three other men raped me. They raped me, they raped me,Ó she repeated time and time again as if to an unseen person. I tried to calm and reassure her but she remained agitated and frequently shied away. As clinically as I could and without paying any extra attention to her breasts and mound, I carefully dried her and in doing so, noticed the bruises forming on her body and the bite marks on her breasts. ÒYou want me to phone the police?Ó

ÒNo,Ó she shook her head, ÒWith their money they would find a way out of it and I would be humiliated further. Please donÕt let them know IÕm here.Ó In the rather dim light from the overheard lamp, I looked at her petite body, her moderate breasts with their cold hardened nipples, and dark hair, which matched that of her pubic mound, and wondered how sheÕd got into a situation where her husband assisted in her rape. She started shivering again and I insisted she get into my berth. ÒIÕm getting in too but you wonÕt be harmed in any way but IÕll help to get you warm again.Ó I deliberately didnÕt mention the rape word. Leaving my shirt and underpants on, I climbed in beside her and in the small bunk I had to press close to her body. For a while she moaned and wriggled, disconcerted at my hugging and being so close but eventually she calmed down and drifted into a disturbed sleep, exhausted from the trauma and her ordeal. For a long while I lay awake, wondering what I had let myself in for, and what to do with the woman whose name I didnÕt yet know. In many ways I could understand her not wishing to go to the police and have to recount the incident many times over to strangers, but what should I do? To her, when she recovered a little, IÕd be no more than hired help but I knew she also needed time away from them and from the authorities to decide what to do.

Her movements and muttering kept me awake and at five a.m. I slipped out of bed, pissed over the side before dressing and putting the kettle on. The noise of the boiling kettle roused her and, sitting up it took a few moments for her to remember her situation and why she was naked. Hastily pulling the duvet to cover her breasts, she looked fearfully at me. ÒIÕm making a mug of tea and then IÕll see what I can find in the way of clothing. There wonÕt be anything that will fit but it will cover you and keep the chill out.Ó I found a sweater and a pair of shorts with a belt and remembered, ÒHereÕs my sisterÕs fishing smock, that can go over the other things but it wonÕt look elegant.Ó

Presenting her with the mug of tea, I explained my plan. ÒIÕm going to start the engine shortly and motor to FlatmanÕs Hole for an hour or twoÕs fishing, like IÕd already planned. The weatherÕs fine and the seaÕs calm and it will give you time to think about what you want to do, or do you want me to take you ashore now?Ó No answer. ÒCome into the wheelhouse when youÕre ready and weÕre well away from the ÔDragonÕ and IÕll make breakfast when weÕre anchored at the Hole. You wonÕt be harmed or hurt in any way.Ó I again tried to reassure her.

She remained below until I anchored and went to the galley to start breakfast. I had to smile at her appearance, definitely not the height of fashion but it covered her body. I had nothing suitable for her feet but walking about on the boat in bare feet, wouldnÕt be a great problem. Seeing me smile, she gave a little grin too. ÒMorning, IÕm Ian, Ian Astley.Ó

ÒBarbara, Mrs. Barbara Wellthorpe. IÕm sorry IÕve caused you so much trouble, what do you plan to do with me?Ó She shrunk away to the far corner of the small cabin and looked nervously at me.

ÒThat largely depends on what you want. For now, IÕm making breakfast and afterwards we can discuss the options.Ó

ÒI suppose it was a stupid thing to do,Ó Barbara started after IÕd set two rods in their holders and sat watching the tips, ÒBut at the time it seemed the only way out of the mess IÕd been dragged into. Do you mind if I tell you? In confidence?Ó

ÒWhatever you say on this boat, stays on this boat. You only need to tell me what youÕd like me to do but if telling the story will help get it off your chest, feel free to do so.Ó

She nodded and went on, ÒYou need to know some of the story to know what to do with me.Ó After a lengthy silence, she continued, Ò My parents arranged my marriage to Richard Wellthorpe for financial reasons. I didnÕt dislike him, not at first anyway, but I found out only a month after the wedding, he wanted a swinging lifestyle and to exchange partners. I knew he had other women and he tried to link me with other men at parties and became annoyed when I didnÕt cooperate. Several times I found myself in situations where I had to forcibly refuse the attentions of a man when Richard wanted his wife or partner. This angered him and he arranged the boat trip without my knowing and I believed we were just travelling to Fordbridge to visit friends of his. I knew when I saw the group, another attempt at swinging was on the cards but I believed I could resist as IÕd always done. Knowing I needed a clear head, I pretended to drink at the White Harte and pretended to be as merry as the others and again when we returned to the boat and the party started, I drank very little. Michael Coulter, the owner of the boat, wanted to have me and when I said, ÒNo,Ó he asked Richard if he allowed such behaviour. ÒI think it is time she conformed to our ways and my wishes,Ó my husband stated and grabbed me and started to undo my dress. When I struggled he asked others to help and soon theyÕd stripped me naked and held me while Michael Coulter raped me with all the others standing and laughing. He sucked and bit my breasts and added to the marks left by their efforts to subdue me. Richard held me while three others raped me. I screamed and protested but no one helped although some of the women cried. When the rapes finished I sat in the corner and one of the girls tried to comfort me but one of the men took me to my cabin and tried to insist that I suck him until he could get it hard enough to rape me, but I showed him my teeth and threatened to bite it until it needed stitches. He took me seriously and went elsewhere.Ó

ÒMy God, Barbara, I didnÕt think that sort of thing happened in our society.Ó

She ignored the remark and went on, ÒI sat in the cabin until it quietened down and people had sorted which beds were being slept in that night, and decided I couldnÕt face another moment with them and the only way to get out before I too spiralled to further depths of degradation, was to end my life; a miserable enough life before this weekend. I wrote a note for my parents saying what happened and left it under my pillow and went to the back of the boat and jumped in. You know the rest.Ó

I put my arm around her and saw the fear in her eyes again until she realised I didnÕt intend harming her. ÒWeÕll see what we can do to sort this out. IÕm just so glad that some other fisherman isnÕt dragging a decomposing body out of the water. YouÕre much too young and attractive to be lying on a morgue table.Ó Pretending to watch the rod tips for any sign of a bite, I thought about the situation.

ÒItÕs nearly eight oÕclock now but I doubt if many on the ÔDragonÕ will be up and it may be a little while after that before your absence is discovered. Maybe weÕll leave them to worry for a while and enjoy the fishing and the weather.Ó

ÒWhat do you think theyÕll do when they find IÕm missing?Ó

ÒDifficult to say. May depend on whether or not they find the letter. TheyÕve two choices, to acknowledge you are missing or to hide the fact. If they suspect you jumped overboard, hiding will only cause greater problems later when your body is found and the teeth marks match MichaelÕs. ThereÕd then be a murder investigation and Richard would be a prime suspect if he didnÕt report your absence, so I expect they are intelligent enough to work that out. I expect some of the girls would give your side of the story if detectives questioned them closely enough. Either way they are in trouble. Best for us to sit tight an wait to see or hear what happens and go back later as though this had been a normal fishing day for me.Ó

11 a.m. my phone rings. ÒHi Enrico, what gives that you disturb the fish?Ó I asked after recognising the caller ID.

ÒHad the police round. One of those silly bitches on the ÔDragonÕ jumped in the water and committed suicide last night. They wanted to know where to look first to find the body cuz they know I helped them find that lad that fell in a year ago.Ó

ÒTell them to look in FlatmanÕs Hole and it wonÕt be a body they find.Ó

ÒYou got her there? Better let them know as they planning a full-scale search. Is she okay?Ó

ÒYep, more or less. Bruises and scratches and more than a little traumatised. The story will have to keep till later. I suppose the press boys will get the story now so IÕm going to turn the phone off so as not to disturb the fishing. WeÕll be back early afternoon, before the tide starts to ebb.Ó

Barbara looked worried and expressed her concern when I told her. ÒThey canÕt make me go back to him, can they?Ó she asked, ÒIÕd be in serious trouble if I did. And where would I live? I doubt if mother would have me back after arranging the marriage and sheÕd say it was my fault.Ó

ÒYou can stay with my sister and me if you donÕt mind slumming it. ThereÕs another bedroom. Do you have a job to go to?Ó

She shook her head. ÒI used to work in a travel agency but gave it up when I married. As to staying with you... I donÕt know. IÕve had enough of men. YouÕve been very kind and IÕm glad you saved me but more than that, I donÕt know. ItÕs all a whirlpool of conflicting thoughts.Ó

As the morning wore on, we talked more and gradually I learned a little of her life while she learned a great deal more about mine and I came to the conclusion that she wasnÕt as snooty as her cultured voice had me believe. A little before noon, our conversation came to an abrupt end. ÒLooks like we have visitors,Ó I remarked when I saw the RNLI inshore boat streaking towards us and as it came closer, saw a uniformed policeman accompanied by a policewoman. After the usual greetings and checking our identities, PC Ray Summers and I sat on the foredeck while he took my statement, and PC Rachael Villims sat in the cockpit and went over BarbaraÕs story.

It took longer than mine and at the end, Barbara stood and crying, informed me, ÒIan, I have to go with them because they have my suicide note and already know what happened. They have the others under arrest. Oh God, I donÕt know how IÕll get through this. Thank you for saving me, but at the moment, I wish you hadnÕt.Ó

I jumped down into the cockpit, gave her a hug and a quick kiss, and said, ÒYouÕll get through it okay, and if you need help or a place to stay, let me know.Ó They wanted me to go with them too but I refused because I didnÕt wish to leave the ÔSarsaparillaÕ anchored in open water. In the end I agreed to go back in my boat but PC Summers would stay with me. It would be a more comfortable if slower trip for him. Did they expect me to do a runner and flee to France in a small boat?

The police kept me away from Barbara and placed her in a refuge for battered women, firstly until her husband and Michael Coulter, and two other men were committed for trial and then they extended it until the trial itself. They asked her not to see or make contact with me but they didnÕt make it a firm order but she conformed for a little while.

Nearly a fortnight went by before on a Sunday evening, Jonathan Brisewell, BarbaraÕs brother, paid me a visit, ostensibly to return my clothes, and I introduced him to Kate, my sister. ÒHow is Barbara?Ó I asked.

ÒDepressed at living in a squalid bedsit with other depressed women staying in other flats in the block, many with screaming children. Mother refuses to have her back and father goes along with her and IÕve started looking for a place for her but until the divorce is settled we wonÕt know what funds she has. WeÕve been able to get her clothes and stuff from the boat and from her home and IÕm storing much of it because thereÕs so little room at the bedsit. ItÕs almost like a prison. I have her car too as it would soon be vandalised on her estate.Ó

ÒShe could live here if theyÕd let her,Ó Kate commented, ÒThereÕs two spare bedrooms although one Ian uses for his writing work. We donÕt employ a maid so sheÕd have to muck in with the cooking and cleaning but otherwise, she could be independent and IÕd see this brother of mine didnÕt force her to do anything she didnÕt want to.Ó Kate, at 24, is eighteen months younger than me, and a forthright, caring person.

ÒAnd she wouldnÕt be alone,Ó Jonathan added, ÒThe police will oppose it but I talked with my solicitor about getting a place of her own and he said, the police will try to keep you apart but neither of you are under arrest or charged with anything, so they couldnÕt enforce it provided there wasnÕt any compulsion involved. She has money enough to pay for a small flat and will look for work when they give her a break.Ó

ÒIs she seeing a shrink about committing suicide?Ó I thought anyone who did so automatically received a mental assessment.

ÒYes, once a week. Supposed to be voluntary but they insist on return visits and that makes it worse as she has to relive the whole damn drama again.Ó

ÒItÕs a pity they got hold of that suicide note otherwise she could have pretended to have fallen overboard, which is one scenario we discussed that morning on my boat.Ó

ÒIt was the girl, Sofia, the one who comforted her for a while after the rapes, who found it during the search for her on the boat and kept it to herself until the police came. She told Michael and others that Barb had said she might kill herself when they talked.Ó

ÒHas she put in for a divorce?Ó Kate asked.

ÒYes, we did that a few days ago.Ó

Kate sat silently for a time, and then asked, ÒI work in an office in Fordbridge on weekdays but I could get an hour or so off, could we go to see your solicitor and arrange for her to come here, if only to see the place and see us?Ó

We spent some time discussing the issues, or at least Jonathan and Kate did, and for him to see the room. They exchanged mobile phone numbers, unusual for Kate, and he agreed to contact her as soon as he could get an appointment.

ÒWhatÕs with you two?Ó I chided her when Jonathan left, but she only pulled a face at me and didnÕt answer.

It took another two weeks before arrangements were made for Barbara and Jonathan to visit and, although it is only a country house, she fell in love with it maybe because, compared to her bedsit, the place was a palace. Kate had already met Barbara when Jon took her to the bedsit and theyÕd spent an hour together. ÒSheÕs okay brother dear; talks posh but acts normal, like her brother,Ó she opined afterwards. IÕd already begun to suspect a relationship between her and Jon from the number of meetings that were needed to make arrangements.

Working at home, writing for various magazines, mostly on fishing and related issues, I can arrange my schedule to suit my needs and my fishing and was at home on the Monday morning when Jon and Barbara arrived. Kate took the day off too so we were all there when they arrived in separate cars. I gave her a hug and enquired how she felt and then spent the morning, unloading her stuff and sorting the room to her liking. Jon and I did the heavy work, while Kate and Barb unpacked and sometime during the afternoon, Jon arranged to take Kate to the cinema; a deliberate and transparent ploy to leave Barbara and me alone for the evening.

For a while we sat outside watching the sunset without speaking. Barbara broke the silence. ÒIan, IÕm sure you can guess it took me a long while to make a decision to come here, not for reasons of upgrading my accommodation, but the fact that I would be living with a man and there would be times, like now, when IÕd be alone with him. Knowing a little of my past and what happened at the party on the ÔGolden DragonÕ, I wondered if youÕd even want a woman whoÕd been through that and whether or not that woman, me, would allow another man into her life. Would you only think of me as a whore, who went to the party knowing sex promiscuity was involved? Would you have doubts about my wanting to have sex with you? IÕm disease free, they checked that at the hospital so thereÕs no worries there and IÕm on the pill. I tried to push such doubts aside remembering that after only that few hours we were together, I felt attracted to you and wondered if you felt a similar attraction. We melded in a way that IÕd never done with any of my previous boyfriends and certainly not with my husband. Only after KateÕs visit did I get an inkling that you had similar feelings for me and with JonÕs encouragement and him saying, ÒDonÕt give up on life Barb and become an old spinster,Ó I did just that. I wanted you to know, that IÕm not a whore, but I can and do enjoy sex with the right person. I certainly wasnÕt a virgin when I married but IÕd only given myself to boys I liked, and not many of them, so please donÕt think what happened has caused me to shut down my desires and build a barrier between men and me.Ó

She took my hand, pulled me close and, on impulse, I hugged her tightly. Our lips met and we kissed, long and hard. Inevitably we ended up in bed together and I once again saw her naked body, this time devoid of cuts and bruises. We made love gently and passionately and were still in bed together when Kate and Jon returned. ÒI canÕt get to my room without being seen,Ó I whispered and Barbara giggled and held me and with more giggling, we kissed again. They must have heard us and I then realised my bedroom door was wide open and Kate would see the empty room. It didnÕt matter. Kate brought Jonathan upstairs and we heard her door close and later the creak of the bedsprings.

ÒYou going to stay on the boat for a nightÕs fishing?Ó Enrico asked with a grin on his face.

WeÕd spent an enjoyable day on the water with our wives. ÒNo,Ó Barbara exclaimed emphatically, ÒNo, he might catch another mermaid and oneÕs enough for him.Ó
